GFCI / AFCI Breakers & Receptacles

Across the U.S. approximately 4,400 people are injured and an additional 400 die each year resulting from electrical hazards annually. Add in electrical fire, and you have what results in an estimated $1.6 billion in property damage each year. Could these accidents have been prevented? When it comes to electrical safety, what you don’t know can hurt you.

Is your home missing these crucial electrical safety devices?

GFCI Outlets

GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. A GFCI is required in areas with an increased risk of shock due to electrical hazards, such as water and faulty appliances. In order to protect you from electrical hazards, a GFCI monitors electrical current, tripping off power when it detects an imbalance – current flowing along an unintended path. Think of a GFCI as an extra-sensitive power interrupter to protect you against electrocution – even in outlets that are not grounded. GFCIs are required for all these locations:

  1. Kitchens (including dishwashers, refrigerators, ranges, cooktops, ovens and microwaves)
  2. Bathrooms
  3. Laundry and utility rooms (including clothes washers and dryers)
  4. Wet bars and other areas where receptacles are within 6 ft of sinks
  5. Garages (including ceiling outlets for garage door openers)
  6. All exterior receptacles and outside areas of your home, including outdoor kitchens, spas, and pools. (HVAC equipment will require GFCI protection beginning in 2026.)

The button(s) on the breakers or receptacles providing GFCI protection must be visible, and able to be reached quickly and easily.

AFCI Outlets

AFCI stands for Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter.  These devices, whether presented as an AFCI breaker or dual-function  (AFCI & GFCI) breaker or receptacle, are designed to detect tiny gaps in electrical connections before they become a fire hazard. The National Electrical Code (NEC) requires AFCI protection for all interior spaces of a home except bathrooms and garages.  AFCI protection is not required for outside areas.

Do I really need to upgrade receptacles or breakers?

Though you may have an older home or business where building codes at the time did not require these receptacles or breakers, proper home safety does. Regular outlets and circuit breakers are designed to protect the house’s electrical system, not people. Considering the possible damage to life and property, why wouldn’t you want to protect yourself and others from unnecessary electrical hazards by bringing your property up to current standards with GFCI/AFCI protection?

Shocked by how inadequately prepared for electrical hazards your home or business may be? Don’t get burned by ignoring the need for these inexpensive, potentially life-saving devices. Contact Excellent Electric today.

Always Hire a Professional
No matter how urgent any electrical repairs may seem, it’s never okay to attempt to handle them on your own. Trying to take care of electrical problems without professional training is extremely dangerous. If you or someone else aren’t hurt during your attempt, there’s still a chance that you’ve left something undone that poses a huge risk to you, your home, or your family. In fact, faulty electrical wiring is the number one cause of house fires in the United States, according to the National Fire Protection Agency. So in order to make sure that your home is safe, always rely on a professional for any electrical services.
